Citrus in the Riverina
The Riverina Citrus industry comprises of over 500 citrus properties, supplying 45 citrus packing sheds and 8 citrus juice processors throughout Australia. Fresh quality fruit and juice is supplied to domestic and export customers.
Approximately 30% of all Australia’s citrus production is grown in the Riverina.
On average the total production is of citrus in the Riverina is 180,000 tonnes.
The varieties of citrus grown vary widely, with the production of Valencia oranges being the greatest, with increasing numbers of Summer and Winter Navels becoming available.
Other varieties produced include grapefruit, lemons and mandarins.
Citrus plantings in the Riverina equate to approximately 8,500 hectares, with over 3 million trees in total.
At any one time, only 85% of the Riverina’s trees will be in production, due to constant replanting, to keep up with the consumer and market demand.
